Local Information
Below are a number of links to organisations and websites which can tell you more about Robertsbridge.![]() | Salehurst Parish Council The original settlement was at Salehurst which is described in the Domesday Book of 1085 as having "7 villagers and 8 cottagers, with 6 ploughs, a church and 16 acres" - it appears to be not much bigger now! The present church dates, in part, from the 12th century and contains some rare 14th century glass with drawings of birds and a 12th century font carved with salamanders said to have been given by King Richard 1st as thanks for the Abbott of Robertsbridge helping to raise his ransom when he was captured on his way home from the Crusades. In the graveyard there are table tombs with terracotta plaques by Jonathon Harmer. www.salehurst-pc.org.uk |
![]() | About Robertsbridge Robertsbridge owes its existence and its name to the arrival of Cistercian monks from Boxley, Kent. They founded a small chapel believed to be near the present George Inn and in 1176 a charter was granted to the Abbey of Robertsbridge. At some time point the Abbott, Robert de Martin, or perhaps some other benefactor named Robert, is believed to have had a new bridge built to replace, or improve, the river crossing at Salehurst. The latinised form, Pons Roberti, Robert’s bridge, appears in the abbey records and on the abbey seal of the 13th century and is the first recorded use of the name. www.aboutrobertsbridge.org.uk |
