About Us
The constitution of Robertsbridge Enterprise Group says that it exists “to promote the economic and community prosperity of the area around Robertsbridge, and to do this in a sustainable way which will not spoil the legacy we leave to our children”. Like most organisations it has its own officers, holds monthly meetings on the first Wednesday on each month at 7.30pm at the Darvell Community, where all members are most welcome. It also holds Business Breakfasts on the last Wednesday in each month at the Seven Stars at the early hour of 7.15am, finishing by 8.30am. Recent speakers to this gathering have included the Rother District Council Chief Executive, Derek Stevens, on how the local council is facing up to the recession and the spending squeeze, and representatives from many organisations who can help small businesses and enterprises.
REG has the avowed aim of helping not just private enterprise businesses, whether on the High Street or small one person businesses operating out of people’s homes, but also social enterprises and organisations such as the two schools and Robertsbridge Children’s Services, the provider of outstanding pre-school education. All contribute to the vibrancy of the local community and economy
During its time, REG has supported the Parish Council on many planning matters, including the extension of the conservation area in the village. It has taken an active role in planning debates and appeals surrounding the possible development of the Mill Site, which REG regards as absolutely critical to the creation of important opportunities for small businesses in Robertsbridge.
REG has supported the Rother Valley Railway in its efforts to develop the rail project linking Robertsbridge to Bodiam, and submitted a funding bid on its behalf. REG also is working with the Parish Council and others to promote a cycle and bridle route between Robertsbridge and Bodiam. Both of these enterprises are designed to enhance the tourism appeal of Robertsbridge in a truly sustainable fashion.
One of the aims of REG is to create a specific tourism strategy for the area, distinct from Battle, but drawing on such elements as the beauty and history of the architecture in the High Street, the transport connections, cycling, horse riding, as well as attractions such as Bodiam Castle.
REG is also keen to promote a greener environment and has worked with the local car dealer, Culverwells, to provide a cardboard and paper recycling facility at the rear of their premises on Station Road. It is open not only to REG members but now to the public, and provides a facility not currently provided by any other local authority in the area.
REG has taken out public liability insurance, which members can, subject to certain conditions, use for their public events, if they are linked directly with REG’s aims and objectives. It has supported Robertsbridge Arts Partnership, a member, in its highly successful and innovative street carnival, Christmas Capers, held each year on the first Friday evening in December.
REG offers a help and guidance service on specific areas of concern via its members, who have specific skills in a wide variety of areas. One example of this has been advice given on how to lower business rates bills that businesses face, where the experience of one person in property management together with the knowledge of the local district councillor has been able to help members alleviate the increasing burden of business rates.
And this is now the website - which you have now discovered, as a tool to find your way about the varied offer of goods, services and facilities available from members of REG.
